Close your eyes and imagine a park along Park Avenue--children safe from speeding cars, families smiling in the summer sun, cyclists moving slowly--everyone enjoying the pleasures of it all. Imagine this park stretched from 72nd Street to the Brooklyn Bridge, peppered with venues for classes, rest stops and meeting places. Imagine hundreds of ambassadors there to help and a handful of closed streets tying it all to the West Side greenway.

Now, open your eyes and mark your calendar. On three Saturdays this summer from 7 am-1 pm, this dream will become a reality.

After years of T.A. advocacy, the Department of Transportation will hold a Ciclovía-style street closure in New York City. Neighbors, visitors and everyone that attends will have the rare opportunity to reclaim streets as a public space for physical activity and play.

Increasingly over the years, T.A. has helped made events like this a reality. From car-free Sundays on the Grand Concourse to this year's Car-Free Crotona to 30 block parties held in neighborhoods all around the city to Williamsburg Walks, we've been spreading the message that streets are for people by encouraging car-free events. We want Summer Streets, the most high-profile of these to date, to be a great affair so spread the word and stay tuned for more information on how you can help to make Summer Streets as amazing as can be.

Saturday Aug 9 + 16 + 23 from 7 am-1 pm
@ Park Ave from 72nd Street down to 4th Ave & Lafayette to Brooklyn Bridge

A Sunday Afternoon Barbecue and Hang at The Yard

Gussie up to get down at the brand new, easy-going, late afternoon, barbecue cum dance party -- every Sunday throughout the summer. Sunday Best! takes over The Yard, a leafy waterside lot on the Gowanus Canal for a nice, mid-afternoon barbecue. It’s no ordinary weenie roast, though. The bar-b’s organic and resident DJs Justin Carter, Eamon Harkin and Doug Singer play alongside some of the finest DJs to ever take on a back yard…

<s>May 25
Roy Davis Jr – Chicago house legend playing his first New York set in years

June 01
King Britt – This party with the former Digable Planets member is FREE!

June 08
Trusme – A Manchester man walking in the very large shoes of Moodymann

June 15
Stefan Goldmann - Innervisions artist who makes jangling, melodic dance music

June 22
Afrika Bambaataa – The hip-hop progenitor and legend who still keeps it eclectic

June 29
Rick Wilhite and Jerome Derradji – Three Chairs member with Still Music founder

July 6
Riton – UK re-rubber on Berlin’s Get Physical imprint

July 13
Kevin Saunderson – The Detroit legend plays whatever he wants... and we like it!

July 20
Move D – Former Warp Records ambient artist now making super deep house

July 27
The Wurst BBQ – My Cousin Roy, Lee Douglas, and Runaway (Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault) serving up sausages!

August 3
Danny Wang – The prodigal progenitor of disco house returns to New York!

August 10
John Tejada – Maker of the lushest and bumpiest techno of the past decade

August 17
<s>Pilooski – Paris’ edit-maker of the moment</s> UPDATE: So edit-maker of the moment, Pilooski, abandoned ship on Sunday Best, and he won't be appearing on August 17.

Luckily, though, we got a guest that arguably created the career template for folks like Pilooski: Nicky Siano. People toss the word legend around quite a bit, but with Nicky there's no question about it. He's been DJing for over thirty-five years, was a mentor of Larry Levan, was one of the two original Studio 54 DJs, and was the man behind The Gallery, one of New York's pioneering members-only clubs. Nicky is also widely considered as one of the first DJs to turn his talents for the dancefloor to the production of music.

We couldn't be happier to have him play.</s>

August 24
Joakim – The Tigersushi and !K7 artist brings weird, organic dance jams

August 31
Metro Area – Hometown disco heroes close out the series nice and easy

* food Organic and mostly local fare provided by Kelly Geary of Sweet Deliverance

MONDAY 08.18
DOWNSTAIRS: Declassified w/ resident Mr. Jonathan Toubin + special guest
Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers)
10pm, $5 with RSVP: mailinglist@NewYorkNightTrain.com
The new Monday rock & roll tradition continues! Resident Mr. Jonathan
Toubin welcomes the infamous and badass Gibby Haynes to our downstairs
party space for an epic DJ set throwdown. As always, go-go girl Anna
Copacabana will be in the house, so expect some cheeky mayhem and a mix of
classic rock, rare tunes spun on 45s, and new rock & roll played LOUD and
proud!

UPSTAIRS: SFOTE's Laventille Bus Benefit Concert
9pm doors, $30 at the door (100% of door profits go directly to charity!!)
SFOTE and Santos Party House are pleased to present "Laventille Bus"-- a
benefit concert with performances by SIMPLY FLY: TUNDE ADEBIMPE (TV on the
Radio), RYAN SAWYER (Tall Firs, Eye Contact, Stars Like Fleas,) and LIZZI
BOUGATSOS (Gang Gang Dance) will be performing. Also on the bill are
DRAGONS OF ZYNTH, KANENG LOLANG, and the BROOKLYN JUMBIES (stilt
dancing/fire breathing/traditional african drum and dance troupe).

Late night DJ dance party will follow, featuring DJ sets from Tunde
Adebimpe, Lizzi Bougatsos, and more DJs TBA!

"Laventille Bus" will benefit SFOTE's 2008 Educational Initiative, which
provides children free sustainable transportation to and from school. 100%
of the door proceeds from this concert will go to the bussing system in
Laventille, Trinidad.

SFOTE found that Laventille, an economically impoverished and crime-ridden
area in Trinidad, had a particular problem: even though there is a free
public school system, there is no public bus system. Because the cost of
transportation is high (6TT per day per child), many children in the area
eventually drop out of school because their parents are unable to afford
bus fare for their entire family.

For more info on SFOTE, head to www.sfote.org

TUESDAY 08.19
Felix Cartal + Nick Lovely Day/Rian Fossett/Jessie
10pm, $10 cover
We're excited that Vancouver's own Felix Cartal will be manning the decks
upstairs at Santos this Tuesday! Known for his extensive production and
remix work (he's worked with a diverse group of artists, from Wu Tang Clan
to MSTRKRFT) and his hard electro sound, Cartal will be making a very
special appearance in NYC. Downstairs, Nick Lovely Day, Rian Fossett &
Jessie will drop tunes for the crowd.

WEDNESDAY 08.20
DOWNSTAIRS: The No Comprendo w/ Prince Language, Lee Douglass (Rong Music,
Wurst Records) + special guest Justin Miller (DFA Records)
10pm, $5
Disco is the name of the game for this special evening with the lads from
The No Comprendo. Residents Prince Language and Lee Douglas welcome their
comrade-in-dance Justin Miller for a full-on dance party explosion. You'll
hear a mix of rare disco tracks, funky jams, and new edits that have made
these DJs some on Hew York's go-to men for dancefloor satisfaction! It's
also supported by the awesome I Heart (iheartnyc.com), so make sure you
dust off some disco duds for the evening!

UPSTAIRS: Opening Ceremony DJs redux
10pm, $5 at the door
The Opening Ceremony DJs are back!
After killing it in our downstairs lounge last month, the DJs from the
ultra-amazing Opening Ceremony boutique are back to keep us partying into
the wee hours... and this time, they take over the upstairs lounge! Expect
a epic music of block-rocking beats: classic rock jams, indie hits,
old-school hip-hop and electro jams-- whatever's clever at this party!

THURSDAY 08.21
Ete D'Amour w/ special guests Timmy Regisford & Jef K
10pm, $10 adv tix at madeevent.com/$10 reduced admission for Shelter
members all night!
The EANY crew are pulling out all the stops this weekend-- upstairs,
underground house legend DJ Timmy Regisford will be manning the decks!
Known for his legendary residency at Club Shelter, Regisford's innovative
house mixes have kept dancefloors packed around the globe for years. Do not
miss this special and intimate DJ set from this legend! And to top it all
off, Jef K will be downstairs in our disco lounge also with Crack 'n' Speed
from Paris! This night will definitely challenge your dancefloor stamina...

FRIDAY 08.22
DJs Rich Medina and Q-Tip
10pm, $10 cover
NYC funk & soulsters Rich Medina and Q-Tip take over Santos for their
wildly-popular Friday night party. Hip-hop, funk, soul, afrobeat, and
beyond are all on the menu for this party... expect a diverse,
ready-to-dance crowd, special guests, and more!

SATURDAY 08.23
FIXED w/ special guests Reinhard Voigt (Kompakt Records) & Brodinsky
(Mental Groove) + Ebony Bones LIVE (US Debut show)!!
10pm, $12 door/$10 adv tix at igetrvng.com or at Other Music
FIXED residents JDH & Dave P are back, and wow, this show is going to be
hella intense! They've wrangled up a special DJ set from Kompakt's Reinhard
Voigt, known for his amazing minimal techno pop sound... Voigt sells out
clubs around the globe, so we are definitely honored that he'll be joining
us for this intimate night at Santos! Also on the bill is hot hot hot
producer/remixer Brodinski-- he's known for remixing a bevy of well-known
superstar acts (including Klaxons, Tiga, DJ Mehdi, and Bonde Do Role) and
for slaying dancefloors with his intense sets, so get ready for a sweaty
one!

Also on the bill is an early (11pm) live performance from the UK-based
Ebony Bones. She's receiving some of the most intense buzz and
word-of-mouth these days due to her sick live shows and waaaay out there
singles (including SPH favorite "Don't Fart on My Heart".. think in the
vein of MIA and Santogold meet Erykah Badu, Bjork, and Kate Bush in a
bizzaro disco world throwdown!) so come check out this new phenom before
she blows up!

SUNDAY 08.24
Nicky Siano -- exclusive residency!
10pm, $5
Widely acknowledged as the instrumental figure in the creation of the
modern cult of the dj, Nicky Siano is the "DJs DJ." For this exclusive
residency, Nicky spins his trademarked mix of deeeeep disco rarities, soul,
and funky cuts for his dancefloor devotees.

In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when six replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth.

<s>July 2nd 2008 - The Big Lebowski</s>
While attempting to gain recompense for the ruined rug from his wealthy counterpart, he accepts a one-time job with high pay-off. He enlists the help of his bowling buddy, Walter, a gun-toting Jewish-convert with anger issues. Deception leads to more trouble, and it soon seems that everyone from porn empire tycoons to nihilists want something from The Dude. When "The Dude" Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, two thugs urinate on his rug to coerce him into paying a debt he knows nothing about.
<s>July 16th 2008 - Batman Begins</s>
Eight-year-old Bruce Wayne falls into a cave where he encounters a swarm of bats. Bruce develops a fear of bats, and later urges his parents to leave an opera featuring bat-like creatures. Outside the theater, Bruce Wayne's parents are both killed in a robbery by mugger Joe Chill. Bruce blames himself for his parents' murder: had he not been frightened, the Waynes would not have encountered Chill. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it.

<s>July 30th 2008 - Better Off Dead</s>
Lane Meyer is a depressed teen who looses his girlfriend Beth. This is her reason for the split; "Lane, I think it'd be in my best interest if I dated somebody more popular. Better looking. Drived a nicer car." Anyway, poor Lane is left alone and thinks up treacherous ways of killing himself. He finally meets a French beauty called Monique and falls for her. Simultaneously, he must endure his mothers terrible cooking which literally slides off the table, his disgusting next door neighbour Ricky (and his mum) and he must prepare for the skiing race of his life - to get his old girlfriend back!

<s>August 13th 2008 - The Graduate</s>
Ben has recently graduated college, with his parents now expecting great things from him. At his "Homecoming" party, Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner, has Ben drive her home, which leads to an affair between the two. The affair eventually ends, but comes back to haunt him when he finds himself falling for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's daughter.

August 27th 2008 - Stand By Me
Based on Stephen King's Short story "The Body", "Stand By Me" tells the tale of Gordie Lachance, a writer who looks back on his preteen days when he and three close friends went on their own adventure to find the body of a kid their age who had gone missing and presumed dead. The stakes are upped when the bad kids in town are closely tailing - and it becomes a race to see who'll be able to recover the body first.

September 10th 2008 - The Toyz
Eric chooses a black janitor (Richard Pryor) who has made him laugh with his antics. At first the man suffers many indignities as Eric's "toy", but gradually teaches the lonely boy what it is like to have and to be a friend.

September 19th 2008 - The Shining
A man, his son and wife become the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel where Danny, the son, sees disturbing visions of the hotel's past using a telepathic gift known as "The Shining". The father, Jack Torrance, is underway in a writing project when he slowly slips into insanity as a result of cabin fever and former guests of the hotels ghost's. After being convinced by a waiter's ghost to "correct" the family, Jack goes completely insane. The only thing that can save Danny and his mother is "The Shining".

Totalities, a “contemporary living installation” by Chris Johanson, can be experienced at Deitch Projects from September 4th – October 18th. The exhibition presents the artist’s thoughts on contemporary living, involving, plants, animals, and people, expressed through a multi-media construction incorporating paintings, sculpture, installation and musical performance.

The exhibition’s major theme is the planet earth and its place in the universe. There is also a meditation on the natural world of plants and animals and how they live within themselves, and how they are effected by humans, with an emphasis on recycling. All of the wood used in the exhibition is recycled. Almost all of it comes from New York State and most is retrieved from dumpsters near the artist’s Brooklyn studio and from discarded art shipping crates. The artist asks his friends and acquaintances for scraps of wood, endeavoring to give the wood a third life. He uses the beautiful, natural history of the wood with all its scars to prolong its life and build an entryway back into nature. Johanson talks about the degradation of the planet and the beauty of the world through his art, reminding people of their responsibilities.

In the early evening on Sunday, September 7th, seven hand made boats, or more precisely, seven floating sculptures by Swoon, will dock in front of Deitch Studios on the East River in Long Island City. Their arrival at Deitch Studios will be the final stop on a three-week journey down the Hudson River and around the tip of Manhattan. The seven boats, built by Swoon and her friends from scrap wood and other discarded materials, begin their sail down the Hudson River on August 15th in Troy, New York, stopping along the way for musical and theatrical performances. Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea is a two-part exhibition merging Swoon’s recent portraits, found objects of urban decay and a floating sculptural city. One part of the exhibition is on the water. The other is in the gallery.

Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea is the result of a year of design and construction and the combined efforts of seventy- five collaborators, working under Swoon’s direction. A crew of forty people will sail the seven boats down the Hudson. During the summer of 2006, Swoon and the Miss Rockaway Armada launched a similar project on the Mississippi River. For this year’s project, Swoon designed and supervised the construction of all the boats herself and will culminate the journey with an ambitious exhibition of her large wooden and paper constructions and her large-scale prints.
