(Brooklyn - WABC, October 18, 2007) - Two men, both bicyclists, were killed in separate accidents in Brooklyn Thursday morning.

In the first, police say a bicyclist was struck and killed by an oil truck at the intersection of Union Avenue and Ten Eyck Street in the East Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

The bicyclist, a 26-year-old Massachusetts resident, was hit while cycling in the wrong direction just after 4:15 a.m.

He was allegedly trying to beat the oil truck, turning from southbound Union Avenue to Ten Eyck Street, when he was struck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges were filed.

Later, authorities say a 25-year-old bicyclist was struck by a white passenger van at the intersection of Utica Avenue and Fulton Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, in front of a church.

The driver of the passenger van was not immediately charged. The accident was under investigation.

[ character breakdowns in the extended... ]

For Immediate Release:

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

PRINCIPLES:
VICTOR WOO. 20's. Asian American male. Pop/R&B tenor. Sweetly naïve &
optimistic. Slender build. An idealist who transitions from a gawky/
awkward teenager to emerging ³American pop star singer/songwriter².
Struggles to prove himself while confronting family and cultural
expectations. Piano and/or guitar skills a plus. Plays himself as a
young teenager in Act 1.

STANLEY WOO. 40 - 50. Asian American male. Baritone. Very Strong
Actor. Hard working chinese immigrant and dedicated father to
Victor. A realist who is acutely aware of racial politics and ethnic
stereotyping. He becomes disillusioned by the "American Dream" when
Victor choses to pursue a non-traditional career path. Piano skills
a plus, but not necessary.

GRACE WOO. 40-50. Asian American female. Warm mezzo. Mother to
Victor. Soft spoken and sweet, but can be very firm and strong when
needed. Fiercely supportive of her husband yet doesn¹t have a burning
desire or will to "fight the system".

HENRY. 20's Asian American Male. Pop/R&B Baritone. Medium build. More
"rough-around-the-edges" and "tough guy" than Victor. Can come across
as pessimistic or having a "chip on shoulder² attitude, yet has a
big big heart underneath it all. Becomes Victors best childhood
friend. Plays himself as a young teenager in Act 1.

MICHELLE. 20's. Asian American female. Pop/R&B Mezzo. Lovable,
outgoing, girl next door with "personality". Becomes best friends
with Victor and Henry. Comes from a mixed race (Asian/Latino) family.
Plays herself as a young teenager in Act 1.

MC. 20¹s. African American male. Soulful Baritone. Young, energetic
and hip while also cool and detached. "Star" charismatic persona.
Represents the ideals of pop stardom and provides a Greek chorus-like
commentary throughout the show.

WOMEN. 20¹s (preferably of a minority race, but open to all
possibilities). Soulful, warm R&B/Pop sound. Young, energetic and hip
but with a mature persona. Much like the MC yet with a warm, guiding
light-type compassion towards Victor. Also provides a Greek chorus-
like commentary throughout the show.

ENSEMBLE:
20's - 40's. Any ethnicity. Males and females. Seeking different
types and personalities of strong singers who move well and strong
dancers who sing well. R&B/Pop voices of all types. The ensemble
performs throughout the show in multiple roles.

I've got a new piece up today on the In These Times web site. Last winter, I enrolled in an introductory economics class at the University of Chicago. $ for crayons and the chips for free

Although I support everything that is in the form letter, I am particularly attached to the "afterschool and child-care" portion of it. With reduced funding for afterschools, youth programs, and child-care programs how will these essential services maintain the quiality of their care? Or even worse, how will they be able to remain open?

These services are extremely valuable to New York City -- they support the success of our youth by giving them new skills, higher self-esteem, improved grades, and role-models. To their parents they are a source of relief, help, and comfort knowing that their kids are supervised, getting home work help, and being fed. For those who are neither kids, nor parents, these programs are still valuable. They help lower the likelyhood that their participants will participate in violent or criminal activity.

Not all programs in NYC are fantastic -- but it's not for a lack of trying. It's hard work and requires a lot of resources. With less funding, they will struggle with even the smallest things -- band-aids and ice packs, crayons, cleaning supplies, paper, and pencils. The major expenses are the ones that will put them out of commission -- staffing, space, insurance, and training.

Please, please... reconsider the budget -- if you can't give, at least don't take it away.

I am hoping that you will send a letter to Mayor Bloomberg, urging important funding for children to be included in his Executive Budget.

Regards,
Kay Esterman
Afterschool Program Director

mike bryant and i are looking for a roommate starting march 1st. our new roommate would be moving into a 3 bedroom apt space off the graham ave stop (3rd stop off the L.) the physical address is 81 olive st. #6. our apartment has a fairly large kitchen space, a decent size bathroom (plus a serious shower head), a large living room which contains a 26 x 19 1/2 sony flat screen tv and a dj mix console with a pioneer djm 500 mixer and 1200's - of course.

our new roommate's bedroom is the largest in the house measuring almost 15' x 11' giving you approximately 165 square feet. it faces south giving you nice, natural light. currently the bedroom also contains queen-size bed with a nice clean, firm mattress and a few pieces of furniture and an air conditioner which will remain in the apartment upon our current roommate's departure.

as many of you know, mike and i are djs and producers but we are a courteous folk who keep semi regular hours. our neighbors are all cool. although we live virtually off metropolitan ave, our block is on a small side street which gets minimal through traffic. our street is lined with trees and there is also a park across the street.

back in august, my roommate, mike rescued 3 abandoned kittens and we could not seem to part with them. although we do not house all 3 of our beloved kitten, we did hold on to pistol pete and sloppy joe. daisy mae resides w/ mike's girlfriend and frequently comes over for playdates. so if you own a dog or have allergies, this may not be the place for you.

at this point, we are asking $950. as we said before, we would like to fill this space starting march 1st and would prefer to have our new roommate sign a lease in april.

please contact us at our home number - 718.302.3612 - or by email.

JONATHAN KANE live on WFMU

On Tuesday afternoon at 3:00pm, Table of the Elements' JONATHAN KANE is appearing in concert with his six-piece band on WFMU. The show and corresponding interview will be broadcast on the airwaves in the NYC area; worldwide via the Internet.
* 91.1 fm in the New York City area
* 90.1 fm in the Hudson Valley
* www.wfmu.org: Live on the web in Realaudio, or in Windows Media, as well as two flavors of MP3; all programs archived in MP3 and Realaudio. [mp3 stream]

Here's what WFMU has to say about Jonathan:
"Having performed and recorded with the Swans, Rhys Chatham, La Monte Young, and Dave Soldier's Kropotkins, Jonathan Kane has been one of New York's great powerhouse avant-drummers. On his new Table of the Elements label release _February_, much of the great 1980's Downtown tradition of percussion and open-tuned electric guitar-based minimalism at maximum volume continues, though with deliberate incorporation of the trance of North Mississippi blues heroes like Fred McDowell, Junior Kimbrough, and Otha Turner (whose fife-and-snare workouts were definitely a huge element in the Kropotkins). Today Kane and four guitarists will cut a wide path down the middle of the WFMU studios for what is sure to be a set of total electric power."

PSA: Transit Strike means TransAlt - Tips

A transit strike will create unusual conditions and stresses for everyone in New York City. For many subway and bus commuters, bicycling is the best way to weather a transit strike and help the city move smoothly. Accordingly, the City's contingency plan includes special traffic lanes for bicycles and bike parking at City-owned buildings.

To further aid New Yorkers to employ bicycling as a strategy to get from A to B during a strike, Transportation Alternatives is providing commuters with motivation and information...

* Wear a helmet. Adjust the straps so that the helmet is snug and does not slide.
* Dress Smart. Wear light colored clothing for safety. For the cold weather, wear gloves, but don't overdress. You should feel a little cold at the start, but you'll warm up. Consider wearing a winter hat or bandanna under your helmet until you warm-up.
* Avoid car doors. Stay at least four feet from the nearest parked car and don't hesitate to use a whole lane — it's your right. Getting "doored" is the number one cause of bicycle crashes.
